The Big Bird Battle by Megan Furniss

Theatre maker, writer, performer and improviser Megan Furniss spends a lot of time in Cape Town parks, walking her dogs Linus and Frieda. A lot. Because of this she has gotten to know the park birds; the crazy making hadedas that drive dogs wild, the chattering guinea fowl that never know which way to go, the unfazed pigeons cohabiting with the squirrels, circling pairs of crows, busy, bustling starlings, honking slow Egyptian geese and even the occasional and terrifying hawks.

One long walk an idea came to Megan’s mind, and it was planted there, nagging her until she sat in front of her computer and it all came tumbling out – two gangs; the Hard Hadedas and the Fowl Guinea Fowl who go to war in the leafy green park. That is how The big Bird Battle came to be.

The Big Bird Battle is written in rhyme, and it’s a little bit rude, and quite funny, and very cheeky, and very familiar. Everyone will recognise those hadedas and guinea fowl. It is also proudly locally South African.

Megan submitted it to Penguin Random House SA and was surprised and delighted when she heard back from them that they loved it! They paired her up with Tanja Dunstan who made Megan’s visions come true in her hilarious, bright and fabulously contemporary illustrations.

It’s been a long wait – COVID made everything go really, really slowly, but at last The Big Bird Battle is available in bookstores and online. It has been tested out on a few children. Mosieda said, “It is very nice, and the bling (on the guineas) was a great addition.” Leeya said, “This is the funniest book and I love the hadedas!”
