Involved in preparing food, during the Covid-19 pandemic, in South Africa? TheCapeRobyn is preparing a list ✔ of eateries and food providers, offering meals on a take-out basis and the operator who are serving on site – as per laws of South Africa. Please send us an e-mail or DM, for inclusion. Every effort will be made to verify information, however TheCapeRobyn cannot be responsible for hygiene or other issues relating to food safety.
UPDATE: ❌ lockdown in SA from midnight Thursday March 26 to April 15, 2020- no dine in or take-out available anymore
✔ The idea for this list has been sparked off by New Orleans, food critic Tom Fitzmorris who has put out a list of restaurants which are operating in some form – according to health regulations. Fitzmorris urges us to #spreadthelistnotthevirus. Follow him on Instagram on @theneworleansmenu
Following the President of South Africa’s national address, March 15, 2020, many restaurants have shut down or are shutting down. At the moment (March 21), trading is permitted, with restrictions in terms of number of diners and no alcohol after 6pm. In the time of social distancing take-out makes a great deal of sense.
We love Maharajah in Kloof Street, Cape Town. We are regulars at the curry restaurant, headed up by Jason Moodley and partners.
Maharajah is still operating (March 21) but for our latest dining experience, we went the take out route. It was the usual amazing- fragrant, aromatic and reasonably priced.
We tend to order the same dishes. #SurferTravlGuy has lamb madras off-the-bone (R185). I am dilly about the brinjal (aubergine), peas and mushroom in tomato curry (R109). We start with a serving of samoosas. It is R45 for four. They are very accommodating – on account of the non-meat eater CapeRobyn. We split two meat samoosas (two lamb) and two veg (potato with mint and cumin). Served separately. Meals are accompanied by yellow rice and tomato and onion sambal. Excellent fare and well-priced.
Jason Moodley is related to Theresa Peters who runs Prashad in Rondebosch. Her son Krishan Peters operates Prashad Café in Kloof Street, Gardens (Shop 11b, Palmhof Centre). Prashad is vegetarian. Peters operates the Baxter Theatre Restaurant. The Baxter is closed but Peters’ Rondebosch Prashad is open and is doing a brisk trade in take-out. I recommend her insanely excellent potato and cumin samoosas, matter paneer and veg korma. All delish. Prashad offers loads of substitutes which taste like meat but are veg. She does a butter “chicken” which people swear is chicken.
✔ Hygiene check: When dining at restaurants or ordering take-out, it is prudent to put in a hygiene check and ask if dishwashers are being used. Consider dishes being washed by hand in dirty water. No, not recommended. Consider the glasses that your drinks are served in and the lipstick marks and finger marks. Never a good idea and particularly during the pandemic. Ask: “Do you use a dishwasher?”
