What: 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day South Africa -#BokkeBlanket Reveal at Steyn City School, Steyn City
When: June 9, 2021- by invite only because of Covid. To request an invite, e-mail

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day was launched in2013 by Carolyn Steyn- philanthropist, actress and Renaissance Woman extraordinaire. Steyn was invited to knit or sew 67 blankets for distribution to worthy organisations on Mandela Day. The challenge to knit the blankets came from Madiba’s PA, Zelda la Grange. Steyn was game and called on  others to join her and knit blankets- going beyond the target of 67 blankets. From there, a vital activist community movement developed. Check out the website for 67 Blankets, to see the specs regarding the knitting of blankets. With winter approaching, in year two of the pandemic and lockdown, there are many people who desperately need blankets. To launch the 2021 67 Blankets campaign, there will be a “big green and gold reveal” on June 9- of the world’s largest Springbok Blanket. Johan ‘Rassie’ Erasmus, John Smit and the Beast Tendai Mtawarira will be at the celebratory event.  The ‘blanket’ which depicts the Bok and South African flags will cover rugby field. The #BokkeBlanket  is huge and “will only be visible from the sky earth’s atmosphere and via satellite.” This “green and gold achievement” celebrates the Boks’ historic 2019 Rugby World Cup win and is not only emblematic of the pride of our nation but is a tangible reminder that we need to keep people warm, in South Africa this winter. We remember the euphoria of winning the 2019 World Cup and how we could hug and celebrate. Now, in lockdown, we may have to keep our physical/social distance but by providing blankets, or contributing to this amazing organisation, we can extend a hug through a blanket. Check out the Facebook page to see the insuring stories of individuals who knit for groups like #KnitWits. Go Bokke! Go 67 Blankets! Bravo Carolyn Steyn for making an epic event out of 67 Blankets 2021.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day South AfricaWhat size should the blankets be?

Large/Adult blankets to measure 140 x 180 cm.
Medium/Child blankets to measure 120 x 160 cm.
Small/Baby blankets to measure 100 x 120 cm. We find that we get a lot more small blankets than any other size and we urge you to make the larger sizes.

Can I make squares?
Yes – we are happy to accept squares which are 20 x 20 cm in size. These will then be sewn into blankets by volunteers. Please measure the squares. It’s just so much easier to join them if they are the correct size.
