Vaginal pH: what’s in a number?

As happy and healthy as we are, ensuring that our intimate areas are in shipshape is important too. There’s one little number that we all need to know about, pH. Maintaining the pH balance of the vagina is essential to keeping it healthy. A normal pH level is usually anything from 3.8 to 4.2¹ and a higher pH value could cause infections as it can allow bacteria and yeast to thrive.²

So, what affects the all-important pH? There are several factors. Antibiotics may be used to kill harmful bacteria, but these medications can also kill good bacteria, not only in the gut, but in the vagina too.² Other medicines can also affect one’s pH, including oral contraceptives.¹

Another pH altering factor is menopause. One study found that women tend to have higher pH levels during menopause. In the study, women in menopause had an average  pH of 5.3.²

As the pH of semen is the direct opposite of the vagina’s acidic environment, it may temporarily increase pH levels during sexual intercourse.²

We all know that stress plays a major factor in so many health-related issues. Stress can exert major pressure on both your body and your life, and it can affect your pH level too.¹

Poor hygiene could also alter pH levels.¹ The vagina is designed to keep itself clean with the help of natural secretions, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash down there daily. It is also important to practise good perineal hygiene (the section between the vagina and the anus) daily.

Scented detergents, soaps and feminine sprays could also contribute to an altered pH level.¹ The GynaGuard range, however, has proactively formulated certain products to promote pH level control. Ultimate Intimate Wash and Essential Intimate Wash are formulated to include probiotics. GynaGuard Foam Bath products (Fragrance-Free for sensitive skins, and Lightly Fragranced) also contain probiotics and are gentle enough to use in your daily hygiene routine.
