In May 2022, Zip Zap Circus premiered its show, Slapstick, in the Zip Zap Dome in Cape Town. The show ran over two weekends (four performances) and captivated audiences with circus magic and a wonderfully upbeat soundtrack of music featuring iconic songs such as, Feeling Good and What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong). As I wrote in my review of Slapstick [May 2022- review link follows], I was captivated by the show. There is the incredible artistry of the young circus artists, the fun concept underpinning the show, cheerful music and vibrant staging (costumes and lighting). The conceptual arc has been inspired by the era of slapstick comedy – the 1930s when people flocked to theatres to be entertained. They were seeking escapism and diversion from the realities and challenges of life. In 2022, we also need to be transported, through entertainment and Zip Zap’s Slapstick delivers spectacularly. Slapstick references include Swing, Gypsy Jazz, The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.
Zip Zap is geared for the younger fry but is a delight for any age. The response to the May 2022 season was overwhelmingly positive, with many people disappointed that they were unable to get tickets and that it was a short season. The great news is that Slapstick is returning in August, to the Zip Zap Dome and will play over two weekends –Sunday August 21 and Sunday August 29, 2022- two shows each day -noon and 4pm. It is ideal entertainment for a weekend in Cape Town, in the Zip Zap Dome which is in the Artscape precinct.
Slapstick is performed by the Zip Zappers and Dare2Dream students. They make up the younger contingent of Zip Zap circus artists. Zip Zap also has a professional company. The professional circus artists mentor the up and coming artists and this is evidenced in the superb production values of Slapstick. As with the May 2022 season, the August 2022 season will be presented in picnic style. This means that the youngsters and families/caregivers can sit/recline/lie on the floor. Note – to bring cushions and backrest chairs (not chairs to block the sightlines for others). No outside picnics and food allowed in the Dome. Pre-order picnics, when booking tickets.
Check out my review of the May 2022 season of Slapstick and you will see photos of youngsters in the audience, creating their own circus moves, balancing on the legs and arms of the parents. The show is clearly inspiring children. The picnic format is wonderful for kids with heaps of energy. They do not have to be confined to sitting in chairs. Happy children make happy parents/caregivers. Zip Zap’s Slap Stick is an experience – not merely a show- with the picnic setting adds to the sense of the circus being a destination. The internationally acclaimed Zip Zap is another great reason to love Cape Town.
