The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg has announced that there will be a festive season show: This Moment, A Musical Cabaret. This is exciting news in the year of Covid when many of us thought that live on stage would not be happening, until well into 2020. When lockdown regulations eased, The Masque rolled out an innovative Spring Season – which included two new premieres. Now, the Masque stage will be buzzing with a razzle dazzle cabaret, produced by Magnetic Storm. It is the first epic scale musical to be staged at the Masque since lockdown and is being presented as the theatre’s fundraiser. Covid safety protocols will be in place – temperature screening, track and trace noting of names of the audience. Yes, with the pandemic raging in Europe and the USA, no one knows what augurs for the future but for this moment, we can experience live theatre, so let us enjoy it while we can and hopefully by winter in South Africa, a vaccine will be available. The news went out today, November 9, that the Covid-19 vaccine being developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE has been effective in preventing more than 90% of infections, so here is hoping.

Let us praise the resilience and optimism of the creatives and producers in the theatre industry. At the best of times, producing theatre is risky business and in these days of uncertainty, fear and anxiety, it truly takes grit and determination to stage theatre. It is an absolute pleasure to experience live theatre. This Moment, A Musical Cabaret is very much about being present, in the moment; the window of opportunity that we have in lockdown level 1, to go to the theatre. This cabaret is framed around opening night. Backstage, a troupe of performers are backstage. They desperately want to reclaim the magic of being back on stage- to seize “this moment”.

Magnetic Storm presents an electrifying musical cabaret at The Masque Theatre

It’s opening night… A troupe of performers are backstage, desperately awaiting the magic about to come alive on stage, and in their own lives. Their sacrifice to be part of this demanding world is great, yet they return to theatre again, and again.Sometimes all you have is This Moment.

We all just want to love and to be loved in return. This is a story about the enduring love we have for the theatre and the hopes and dreams we have for our lives.

This is the first major musical production to be staged at the Masque Theatre since the onset of lockdown. After competitive auditions, nine special performers bring us songs such as Maybe This Time, I’m the Greatest Star and The Show Must Go On in a socially distanced visual feast. Presented by Magnetic Storm, one of SA’s leading event and audio-visual companies, we bring audiences the promise of exceptional sound and seamless tech.

With an admittedly sombre year for the arts behind us, this strong production team are set to uplift our theatre season with stirring songs and a heartfelt story. Serving as a vibrant fundraiser for the Masque Theatre, Cape Town’s much loved 61-year-old community theatre in Muizenberg, your evening’s enjoyment will contribute to the rejuvenation of what theatre can be, in This Moment
