We saw #WeAreDyingHere in the Opera Bar at Artscape Theatre in February, 2020. #WeAreDyingHere tussles with the “violent culture of harassment, abuse, rape and femicide in South Africa.”

It was a pop-up theatre that we sat in on a Saturday evening in February at Artscape. We were not wearing masks. There were hugs as we greeted each other, at the theatre. Hugs now? Sitting close to each other on tightly packed chairs? Can you imagine? It seems like that was another world. This was before the pandemic of Covid-19 had hit our shores. Of course the pandemic of violence against women was – and is- with us. It is getting worse in this climate of unease, fear, anxiety, poverty, unemployment. I recall sitting utterly still; feeling the slap of the text. Read my full review on this site. This is what I wrote, quoting from text in #WeAreDyingHere:

“… please can we be safe- be able to walk down a street – during the day – never mind at night – and arrive safely at our destination. Instead we are faced with “a mosaic of apologies…”; “the traditions of silence”. It is a brutal indictment of the landscape that we inhabit – physical and emotional: “This land is nothing but a graveyard”; “We sit on a mountain top, drafting obituaries”; “A woman’s arrival is sigh of relief.” Throughout is the chilling leitmotif: “These poems might be the only evidence that we were here”; “These poems will be the story…”

Right. Here we are in the pandemic, national lockdown and winter. It has got a lot worse. Vulnerable women are more vulnerable and women in general are terrified to navigate the city – fearful that they will arrive at their destination. The mantra of the lockdown and call to stay at home: “Be Safe. Stay Safe.” Safe? That is a construct that needs a lot of work GBV is on the rise. #WeAreDyingHere – rings out eerily as I write this. When I saw this at Artscape, I had no idea what was in store for the world; for our country; for women. Siphokazi Jonas, Hope Netshivhambe and Babalwa Makwetu were about to embark on a national tour. Covid scuppered their plans.

Support these artists and listen carefully to their words, watch and absorb.
