After almost two years of lockdown, it is exciting that Cape Town’s Zip Zap Circus is back on stage and will be flying high in its new show, Slapstick which is described as a “traditional circus show with a 1930s twist, whacked with layers of comedy”, from the 1930s to the 1960s. The show incorporates references to Swing music, Gypsy Jazz, The Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin. The shows will be in Zip Zap’s Dome, on the foreshore, from December 15 to 22 2021. Yes, there is a performance on the public holiday, December 16. The cast features upcoming professionals from Zip Zap’s Dare2Dream and Zappers groups who performed at Match in Africa 6.  [The mammoth event was held in February 2020 in Cape Town- just before the pandemic- and featured Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal]. Slapstick – the background to the show

Circus has historically been used as entertainment to bring happiness and joy back into people’s lives. In 2021, the world is slowly recovering from the global pandemic. Zip Zap Circus is bringing the circus magic, thrills and exhilaration to you with a never-seen-before show, Slapstick! A traditional circus show with a 1930s twist, whacked with layers of comedy, Slapstick will nostalgically transport the entire family back to the times of Swing, Gypsy Jazz, The Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin. It will take you back to the days of where this type of comedy grew its roots, where a pie in the face was made famous and costumes were a different kind of colourful. Slapstick promises a reflection of the 1930s livelihoods compared to today, and while we’re all still on the pandemic rollercoaster, Zip Zap Circus will transform you into a space of appreciated up-liftment, roaring laughter and fun filled excitement.

Slapstick – creative team

Brent Van Rensburg who is Zip Zap’s artistic director, oversees all its shows, but for Slapstick he has given the opportunity to the team performing Slapstick, to create the show. Slapstick is devised circus theatre – crafted by the collective of performers and instructors. The creative group is: Jason Barnard, Phelelani Ndakrokra, Regan Visagie, Mosuli Ntshonga, Siyabonga Swelindawo and Jacobus Claassen with input from Portia Kewana.
