Grace Notes is an annual festive season highlight on Cape Town Opera’s calendar. This annual event is when the internationally award-winning Cape Town Opera Chorus “embraces its longstanding tradition of a cappella sacred music” – for two performances. It is wonderful that the spiritually uplifting Grace Notes, will take place during a time when we need to immerse ourselves in music which feeds our souls. The structure of the concert unveils a musical melting pot of culture and language where compositions by Byrd, Palestrina, Duruflé and Pärt are assembled anew each year with religious music drawn from Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans, Venda and Swahili traditions. Curator Thuthuka Sibisi and Chorus Master and Conductor Marvin Kernelle have worked tirelessly to carve out a unique space for the chorus in an already vibrant local and international stage. That reputation was further solidified following its acclaimed 2016 premiere in France, sold-out Cape Town performances in 2018 and a successful 2019 European tour to Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg and Germany. Locally, Cape Town Opera Chorus enjoys continued support and patronage via sold out shows each year. And throughout lockdown, where restrictions allowed, they’ve hosted a series of exclusive pop-up concerts to bring some much-needed reprieve to frontline workers, volunteers, and the elderly. “Grace Notes is an all-encompassing spiritual programme that ignites a chord in both the religious and non-religious,” says Kernelle.
