It is tricky to write about friends and family who are involved in events and interesting pursuits. So, I am disclosing that most of the members of Rocksteady – the band – are friends. Rocksteady presents energetic gigs, with a finely tuned playlist which gets audiences dancing and singing along. We have had enormous fun at their shows and the time has come, for TheCapeRobyn to give the band, a shout-out, so here we are. The band is doing two performances of their tribute show, Women of Rock Unleashed-in November 2022- Hillcrest Quarry (Sunday November 13) and at The Drama Factory (November 18). The 5-piece band was established in 2013 and almost a decade later, they are a polished outfit, with an impressive repertoire. The band members are constantly refining their craft and this is evidenced in their shows. In 2018, their lead vocalist, Sharyn Seidel wrote and produced their first tribute show – Woman of Rock – showcasing women in rock. We loved the show.
This year- 2022- Seidel conceptualized a 2nd iteration – Women of Rock Unleashed with some new additions. This show includes Somebody to Love, originally recorded by The Great Society, and later by Jefferson Airplane, SOS by ABBA and Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar. Women of Rock Unleashed was first presented at Café Roux in June this year [2022]. The 2nd iteration of Women of Rock – the Unleashed edition – includes extra songs, additional dialogue and narrative links.
Fun-fact: All the members of this band work in a variety of sectors. Lead vocalist, Sharyn Seidel is a skilled graphic artist and sings in other outfits. Pam Levesque (keyboards, vocals) is a pharmacist. They are passionate about their music and the band, Rocksteady. During the pandemic, the band was put on pause but as soon as they could, they were back on the musical boards. The November 2022 season of Women of Rock Unleashed marks the band’s first show at Hillcrest Quarry and at The Drama Factory. The show was performed in August [2022] at Die Koelkamers Theatre in Paternoster. This was a hugely successful gig and the band has been invited to perform there on Christmas Eve (December 24, 2022).
