Thrilling news is that The Great Gatsby will be on stage from June 30 to July 9, 2022 in The Star Theatre at the HCC (Homecoming Centre) Precinct in District Six. The Star Theatre was formerly the main auditorium at The Fugard Theatre. It is wonderful to see the much-loved space revive again with this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic The Great Gatsby. This is the first major theatrical production in the Star Theatre and has a cast of 27 and a four piece on-stage jazz band. The production ispresented by Cape Town Theatre Company and Claremont Dramatic Society. The director is Neil Leachman and musical director is Regina R Malan. The project is a workshop adaptation and the creative team provides insights into the approach underscoring the production and how the themes in The Great Gatsby reverberate in our current context – living through the pandemic – with its strictures:

Adaption of The Great Gatsby – at its core – about ‘class’

The adaption of The Great Gatsby is a truthful stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel. Even though the novel was published more than 95 years ago, the significance of the work seems to ring even more true today than it did in 1920’s America. At its core, it is a story about ‘class’. It is a story about the have-nots and the failure of the American dream. So we considered that and applied it through today’s lens- the significance of where we find ourselves as a society at this current juncture seemed like a really logical moment to be re-telling the story. Even in a literal sense, we see history repeating itself. The early 1900’s saw Prohibition, the great Flu and restrictions. We have been through all of those things again. It is a repeat of history [Covid pandemic times]. More than that- we are still facing the same tumultuous themes that we were almost a hundred years ago. This is everyone’s story. This is where we are as a society. It is a class issue. We have stayed true to its setting in 1920’s New York; at the end of the day it’s still the story of the failed American Dream. But more than that, it is a story of hope. “Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” Release and production info follows. Info as supplied.

Theatrical masterpiece of beloved tale “The Great Gatsby” debuts at Cape Town’s most beloved theatre. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”                                                                                                                         F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

PRODUCTION SUMMARY

From the uniquely imaginative mind of director Neil Leachman comes the new theatrical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. This adaptation is a deconstructed, avant-garde staging of the classic tale, celebrating the themes of the much loved novel in a contemporary tempo. The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. And so Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.   This glittering staging is set to the rhythm of a filmic score provided by a live jazz band, with powerful vocalists supporting the story unfolding below. Experience the wonder of this tale as never seen before.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Cape Town Theatre and Claremont Dramatic Society presents the iconic tale of Jay Gatsby, as he grasps desperately at the failing illusions of The American Dream. The Great Gatsby will be the first major theatrical event at the newly reopened The Star Theatre at HCC (formerly the site of the beloved Fugard Theatre, in the heart of Cape Town). The project arrives as a brash and bold celebration of live theatre after a season of lockdowns, closures and damage to the performing arts industry. The show features a stellar cast of 27 actors, singers, dancers and musicians, bringing to life the frantic pulse of the Jazz Age – an age of prohibition, fuel shortages and the great flu (sound familiar?)

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

“It is quite important, when staging something as iconic as The Great Gatsby, to lean into the style that was prevalent in the 20s, but to also connect with the audience when presenting characters on a stage. For that reason I have chosen to use many Tableau-style settings while incorporating dynamic and character driven acting. This creates a great contrast which draws the attention to the story, and allows the audience to connect more readily, without being too caught up in establishing hard and fast spaces. This project leans heavily on interpretation rather than literal representation which gives the audience, once again, the opportunity to focus on the story, while also creating settings in their own imagination by use of suggestion. Lastly the choice for mood rather than reality has been made, pulling the audience into a world where they can relax and lose themselves while being part of this performance.” Neil Leachman, director

If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him”                                                                                                                         F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Careless people: Brigitte Simpson as Myrtle Wilson in The Great Gatsby, on The Star Theatre at the HCC. (District Six Home Coming Centre Precinct, formerly The Fugard Theatre) in District Six, June 30 to July 9, 2022.

Nick Carraway – David Wilke

David’s love of theatre started in Primary School in Johannesburg.  On moving to Cape Town he has been fortunate to be involved in a variety of productions such as Oklahoma, Mikado, The Nose, The Full Monty and The Producers, where his passion for singing, dance and performing has been given room to grow.   He received the CATA award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in ‘The Producers’ and was awarded the CATA Best Novice Director for directing ‘The Woman in Black’ on the Masque stage. David has worked at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he busked, managed front of house and ushered. When not on stage, David busies himself with voice over work, appearing in adverts and TV series.  David obtained a BA (Screen Production, Film and English Literature) after which he pursued his studies in Musical Theatre.

Daisy Buchanan – Siobhan Taljaard

Siobhan Taljaard (24) is a Cape Town based, actress, singer and dancer. In 2019 she was part of the cast of Hairspray and South Pacific that previewed at The Artscape. She has been part of productions at various festivals such as Vrystaat Vryfees, Die Woordfees and Die Suid-Ooster Fees. At the 2022 Suid-Ooster Fees she performed alongside the Suid-Ooster soap stars in the Stormsterk show. Since then, he has been involved as actor and director in over 80 theatre and film productions and lost his sanity en route.  The sacrifice was worth it, as he has been rewarded by 3 CATA awards for acting and a host of other society awards.
