Thrilling news is that after a two year hiatus, due to Covid, Duet Gala Concert, is back on stage, at The Artscape Opera House. The glam event is on for one night only- Saturday June 11, 2022 at 6pm. Duet Gala Concert is being presented by Cape Town Opera (CTO) and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO). It is another vital collaboration between the two companies. Raising awareness and funds for the Duet Endowment Trust
The goal of Duet Gala Concert is to raise awareness and funds for the Duet Endowment Trust, an endowment set up by Mrs Wendy Ackerman, to ensure ongoing support for Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
The audience can look forward to a glittering line-up of South African talent, featuring leading soloists such as Nobulumko Mngxekeza, Megan Kahts, Nonhlanhla Yende, Lukhanyo Moyake and William Berger, as well as rising star Khayakazi Madlala. They will be joined by Cape Town Opera soloists, Cape Town Opera’s Young Artists, the award-winning Cape Town Opera Chorus and the Tygerberg Children’s Choir.
Programme for Duet Gala Concert 2022
The exciting programme Duet Gala Concert 2022 is a diverse showcase and includes much loved arias and orchestral pieces from Bizet, Charpentier, Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner,; the Polonaise from Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky) as well as Song to the Moon from Rusalka (Dvořák). Other treasures include Adele’s Aria from Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss), the final trio from Der Rosenkavalier (Richard Strauss) and arias by Korngold and Rossini.

Cape Town Opera’s Artistic Director, Magdalene Minnaar, says: “For this concert, my first Duet collaboration with the CPO, and together with Maestro Szmidt, we created a glorious programme of well-known repertoire not often performed in South Africa. With the emphasis on the larger repertoire, it is a celebration of the fabulous singers and musicians we have in South Africa, a thank you to our patron Wendy Ackerman, and a night we hope the audience will remember for a long time.”

No stranger to South Africa
In addition to conducting and performing on all six continents, Adam Szmidt is passionate about teaching and has an vital association with South Africa.
In 2018 and 2019, Adam Szmidt gave master classes for conductors and singers in Edmonton, Canada and in South Africa, at the universities of Stellenbosch and Potchefstroom.
World premieres and projects
He has conducted world-premieres like the Musical Shadows in Red Light in Cape Town or the Piano Concerto op. 44 by Matthias Hutter. In 2021/22, Adam Szmidt, is leading his 2nd international music academy as Artistic Director in Germany and is pursuing engagements in Brazil and South Africa. He is involved with EcoOpera -an international co-created project for sustainability and innovation.
