The ceremonial ribbon was cut on Thursday June 16, 2022 (Youth Day South Africa), at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), opening Decorex Cape Town 2022. Doing the honours was, Cape Town mayor- Geordin Hill-Lewis, assisted by Carol Weaving, managing director of RX Global, which presents/produces Decorex Africa (Cape Town and Johannesburg editions. Decorex Jozi is on at the Sandton Convention Centre from July 28-31.)
It was great to be back at Decorex live, after its two year absence because of the pandemic. Lots of bright and bold stands. I liked the small independent operators and was intrigued at how online décor shopping has taken off with the likes of Takealot. I was surprised not to see more solar powered home solutions (I saw two stands) and low energy lighting and/or solar lighting. I loved sitting on the Cuphisa Bench with Siviwe Jali who is the founder of Durban based Umugqa Studio. The studio was a finalist in Nando’s Hot Young Designer Search 2020 and the bench is on display at Decorex Cape Town 2022.
Jali explains: “In isiZulu, cuphisa is a verb that means ‘to set a place’ or to ‘take a seat’. “The concept of the design is inspired by the act of one person asking another to create space for them to sit. This act usually happens in public or shared spaces with limited seating. It is inspiring that a small act of generosity and kindness could have such an impact. Creating space for each other.” Quote -source: https://clout-sadesign.co.za/nandos-hyd-2020-winner-and-finalists/ I lounged on the bench with Jali, chilling with this talented designer. It was great to sit and watch Decorex from the bench. It reminds me of a surfboard – maybe there is an influence from Durbs coming in. I love benches and think that we need more in public spaces. Chilling out and watching the crowd- thrilled to be back the design expo. Decorex Cape Town is on until Sunday June 19, 2022.
