Last February – 2020- was packed with live shows. My Cape Town theatre diary was full and I had to make choices what to select. I recall that I declined an invite to a glam event, in favour of attending V-Day on February 16, at The Raptor Room, presented by Cape Town’s Sugar-daddy Theatre Company. Sugar-daddy was staging an adaption of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. V-Days is part of Eve Ensler’s global activist movement against GBV (gender based violence), where she waives the fees to stage her plays. Theatre makers are invited to stage her plays as benefit performances, with proceeds going to benefices and charities.  Sugar-daddy has hosted three V-Day productions- from 2016 to 2020. Rape Crisis Cape Town has been the beneficiary. Some years, the show was presented at more than one venue and there were variations in cast members each performance, according availability of the artists.

February 2020, The Raptor Room, was packed. People were sharing seats. Others were standing. This was before Covid; before masks. With consummate acting, combined with a South African injection of accent and character in parts, this was a production which made me sit on the edge of my chair. Luckily, a recording was made for archival purposes. Sugar-daddy posted the recording on its YouTube channel, SugarTube. There is no charge to watch but donations are welcomed- with the suggested R60 as a minimum as that was the ticket price in February 2020. Sadly, Covid prevented Sugar-daddy from staging a V-Day 2021. V-Day is traditionally held in February – the month of Valentine’s Day- the so-called month of romance and love. The other side of love and romance is violence and in the pandemic, it has got worse. V-Day highlights GBV and raises much needed funds. Hopefully by February 2022, Sugar-daddy will be able to stage another V-Day season. In the meantime, watch the recording of V-Day, Cape Town 2020, Sugar-daddy presenting The Vagina Monologues and please consider making a donation to Rape Crisis.
