Exciting news is the staging of Matilda Jr, on stage, in Cape Town, by Wêla Kapela Productions- which is based in East London. This junior adaptation of the Tony and Olivier Award winning musical, premiered at the 2020 Junior Theater Festivals in Atlanta and Sacramento. It was adapted by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin’s Olivier-the creators of Matilda- based on Roald Dahl’s Matilda. The Wêla Kapela production is on from October 19-28, 2023 at Toneel Huis in Cape Town’s CBD. The production is an hour and has been geared for young audiences and for young performers. Cape Town’s streets will be filled with the whiff of rebellion when Wela Kapela Productions presents Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical JR. from October 19- 28, 2023. Matilda Jnr. tells the story of an extraordinary girl, Matilda Wormwood (Mia Bothma) who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. Unfortunately, her family is far from understanding her unique talents, and she faces relentless mistreatment at the hands of her neglectful parents (Sofia Derkson as Mr Wormwood and Libby Whitfield as Mrs Wormwood) and the tyrannical headmistress of her school, Miss Trunchbull (Mischa Forbes).

Matilda’s life takes a magical turn when she discovers she has a mysterious telekinetic ability. With her newfound power and the support of her kind-hearted teacher, Miss Honey (Sofi Bergström), Matilda takes on the challenges of her world with courage, wit and determination. Through her story, Matilda Jr. celebrates the power of imagination, the importance of kindness, and the belief that even the smallest among us can change the world.
Director Amanda Bothma and the talented cast and crew have been working tirelessly to bring this magical production to life, promising a captivating theatrical experience for audiences of all ages. Audiences can look forward to memorable songs, under the baton of Musical director Tersia Harley, with dazzling choreography by Gia Urbani, and heartwarming performances by the all-junior cast that will transport them to the witty, whimsical world of Matilda.
