Tribute: The electrifying Sipho Hotstix Mabuse at 70 tour, May 15, 2022 at The Daisy Jones Bar, at OMG, Summerhill Wine Estate
It was a privilege to attend Sipho Hotstix Mabuse at 70 tour at The Daisy Jones Bar, May 15, 2022. This was my first time at this quirky live music venue in the Cape Winelands. It reminds me of Potters Place in Jeffrey’s Bay (no longer exists). Concert started promptly at 3pm (wonderful when concerts start on time). It ended promptly at 5pm – because of load shedding. What can I say. The legendary Sipho played for two hours – without a break. The man is 70 and has the stamina of a youngster. He did not break into a sweat. No ‘burnout’ with this living legend. Here is to more concerts by this iconic artist who has been a trailblazer in the industry and a mentor to young artists. He started off with a nod to the Beatles, performed his own hits and South African Songbook Classics such as Brenda Fassie’s Weekend Special.
Breathtaking artistry by Sipho and his six-The Hotband: Thembeka Khumalo (SAMA nominated) on vocals, Simphwe Khubeka (drums), Urban Noblela (guitar), David Mabaso (bass), Lloyd “toto” Mbele (keyboard) and Sipho Mabuse on vocals and saxophone. Sipho turned 70 in November 2021 and it was magic to experience his music as part of his At 70 Tour. The audience was on its feet, loving every moment. Salute to this legendary artist – his dynamism and the way he honours his band. He always credits each person at his concerts – sharing the space with artists, producers and others involved in bringing music to the public.
