Wêla Kapela Productions, from East London is back at the Baxter with its CaberetFest and is presenting three cabarets: Vincent – His quest to love and be loved; Julie Andrews – Uncut and NEXT!!! – Auditions are not for the faint-hearted. Vincent – starring Daniel Anderson (accompanied by Germainne Gamiet on piano), won a Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award at the 2022 National Arts Festival [NAF]. Amanda Bothma is the writer and director for the three cabarets. Each cabaret features live accompaniment. I saw Vincent at NAF and loved it. Wêla Kapela Productions, presents CaberetFest 2022 in Cape Town, at the Baxter ~ Vincent – His quest to love and be loved Writer/director: Amanda Bothma Musical director/pianist: Germainne Gamiet Starring: Daniel Anderson “70 million are bid, 73, 75 Million dollars! Sir? I shall then sell it at 75million dollars. Thank you, sir.” Towards the end of his short life, Vincent Van Gogh, who suffered from mental illness, was treated by Doctor Paul Cachet. Vincent writes to his brother Theo: “A great fire burns within me, but no one stops to warm themselves at it, and passers-by only see a wisp of smoke.” The 37-year-old painter died of a self-inflicted wound in 1890. On May 15, 1990, The Portrait of Doctor Cachet was sold, within three minutes, for 75 million dollars. Vincent, a multimedia cabaret, (Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award 2022) tells of a complex man with a ruthless drive to create and a deep-seated desire to love and be loved. ~ Julie Andrews – Uncut Writer/director: Amanda Bothma Musical director/pianist: Nathan Johannisen Starring: Alison Hillstead Julie Andrews, composed, elegant, well-spoken… a typical English lady? A lady, yes, but not born of noble blood. Julie Andrews is a self-made woman. She spent her childhood performing on the Vaudeville circuit, singing and dancing, two shows a day, six days a week, alongside Pops and Barbara Andrews. Little Julie would stand on a crate to sing a duet with Pops while mom Barbara accompanied them on piano. On 1 November 1948, a thirteen-year-old Andrews became the youngest solo performer ever to be seen in a Royal Variety Performance. But all was not well in the Andrews family. Pops’ drinking was out of control. He was a violent drunk, completely unemployable. So the 14-year-old Julie became the sole provider for the bickering Andrews family… a heavy burden that would haunt her for years to come! ~ NEXT!!! – Auditions are not for the faint-hearted Writer/director: Amanda Bothma Musical director/pianist: Jacques Du Plessis Starring: Dikelo Miamala NEXT!!! is a cabaret starring Dikelo Miamala as Relebogitata, a young black girl from Mount Frere who dreams of stardom. It examines questions of identity, belonging and opportunity in an industry dominated by white performers. Relebogitata has a dream of performing in a leading musical. Working as a waitress she does her all to achieve the unthinkable – a successful career in musical performance. She wants it so much…but is this the right song to impress? In this roller coaster ride of heartache and hope, Relebogitata bounces from one audition to the next, singing songs from well-known Broadway shows to the most powerful Xhosa songs by Miriam Makeba. She will do ANYTHING to avoid the dreaded “Next!!!”. Info as supplied. |
