Cape Town’s Unmute Dance Company presents the annual ArtsAbility Festival which showcases inclusive performance with artists across the board in terms of physical abilities. They all work together, with the notion of “dis-ability” being transmuted into a whole which is about bodies interacting in space, with a dynamic and innovative use of figure, movement and expression. The 2020 festival is online and dovetails with the International Month of Persons living with Disabilities.

The festival features artists from Africa and the global dance community of inclusive performing arts: Unmute, Flatfoot Dance Company (South Africa); Axis Dance Company (USA), BewegGrund (Switzerland). There are pieces which have been developed in series of residencies hosted by Unmute and these feature artists from Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, DRC and South Africa.

Watch list: Access Denied– video presentation/film. Three artists from Unmute Dance Theatre explore “different accessibility challenges” in “a society that overlooks persons with disabilities and their need to move around freely and independently.”
