Anzio September is performing as a policeman on the hunt for The Bra in this bra’s a pyscho, the new play by Zubayr Charles which premieres in Cape Town in the Artscape Arena, July 29 to August 2, 2025. James Stoffberg is playing the Bra – a victim/perpetrator on a rape-revenge crusade. September also plays The Bra’s victims. What binds these individuals together, muses September, is that they yearn for “human connection.” September talks about the multi-character play play which allows him to tap into his “darker side”:
TheCapeRobyn: In this two-hander, you are playing the policeman who is hunting the perpetrator who is also a victim. You are also playing The Bra’s murder victims – a range of individauls. Your thoughts?
Anzio September: These characters are so complex, so real and so relatable. Playing the policeman and The Bra’s murder victims made me realise that all these characters yearn for is human connection. They want to explore the depths of who they are and what they want out of this life. It is always so fresh and exciting to take on many characters at once. As an actor, I am really pushed out of my comfort zone and I am demanded to access those parts of myself that lie dormant.
TCR: Please tell us a bit about the five characters -The Bra’s victims of murder- that you play. Are the changes ringed through clothes, accent?
AS: The characters in Zubayr’s stories are coloured men who don’t necessarily look like the stereotypical “coloured” archetypes seen on TV or stage. These characters often come from Cape Malay backgrounds. It’s funny that this is Zubayr’s story and his characters, yet it feels like they are all different parts of who I am. I can identify with these characters because their accents are very similar, if not the same, as they reflect Zubayr’s dialect — the way he and I speak naturally. When I flow between the five different murder victims, it’s all about my energy, the change of clothing, and asking myself questions like, “How fast does he speak?”, “How does he walk?”, or “Is he an extrovert or an introvert?” These are just some of the mental guidelines I use when I transform into these different men.
TCR: Can you talk about working with Zubayr on Please, don’t call me moffie and now with this bra’s a psycho?
AS. Please, don’t call me moffie was a very revealing experience for both Zubayr and myself – as it became a story based on personal experiences that we shared. I had to dive really deep for this one to ensure that I truly reflect Zubayr’s vision and narrative what a therapeutic journey! this bra’s a psycho is edgy, thrilling, dark and sexual – a total contrast to Please, don’t call me moffie. This show really reveals the potential madness of our psyche. I always tell Zubayr we are “two peas in one stunning pod!” Because we are so similar and we often joke about our love for Britney Spears! Working with him is a match made in heaven and it truly shows through our work.
TCR: Anything else to add about the play, your characters, working with Zubayr and also the territory that he is grappling with in the play – male sexual assault, hook-up culture, and online dating – not stuff that is dealt with a lot in mainstream theatre. Your thoughts?
AZ: Collectively, Zubayr and I share the same vision to bring fresh, gripping, and thought-provoking work to mainstream theatre. I always push for the utter truth and rawness when taking on characters, so doing this bra’s a psycho will be a very liberating experience as it will allow me to tap into the more darker side of myself. This play is very exciting and will have everyone on the edge of their seat.
