Exciting news- theatre may be staged again under lockdown level 2, regulations. I saw Your Perfect Life, last year [2019] at Alexander Bar. Yeah, that seems like another era when we could sit in a theatre. I loved that first viewing- funny and layered play. I watched a broadcast recording at the vNAF – Virtual National Festival and the play took on additional resonances. Links to reviews, follow below. At the heart of Your Perfect Life is the notion of the expectation that women should procreate in order to be fulfill their function as breeders. The engrossing play which received a 2019 Standard Bank Ovation Award at the NAF, engages with two women and the choices that they have made and/or made by default.  For this run at 44 On Long, performances will be at 7pm and 8.30pm, Friday and Saturday for both weekends. There will be eight performances in total, over the two weekends. Bravo to Faeron Wheeler of F Creations for staging live theatre, while we are living with the pandemic. It is great to watch in a theatre – rather than on a screen – and get buffering anxiety. Covid-19 protocols will be in place at 44 on Long– temperature checks, noting of mobile phone numbers at front desk; sanitiser and masks on at all times.

Info supplied by Faeron Wheeler:

What a year 2020 has been! With all the ups and downs, F Creations is excited to be getting back to doing what we love – live performance. The hit show Your Perfect Life will be hitting that stage 44 on Long and the team will be doing 2 performances a night on 2-3 and 9-10 October.

Esra Overberg and the rest of his wonderful team at 44 on Long have worked hard to ensure their venue is safe for everyone who walks through the doors. Incredible sanitation and hygiene protocols have been put in place. This includes screening of staff and patrons upon entry, counter screens and proper spacing between furniture in the bar area.

A maximum of 40 people will be allowed in the audience for each performance, hence the decision to do two performances per night. We are grateful for the thought and planning that has gone into making the venue safe for everyone, and couldn’t think of a better place to get back to treading the boards.

It’s been a year since Your Perfect Life was last seen on stage. Last year, the production played to full houses at the Alexander Bar and received a coveted Standard Bank Ovation Award after its debut at the National Arts Festival. The original team of Erika Marais, Faeron Wheeler and Sue Diepeveen is excited to be back together to bring this piece to life once again.

The play is set at a 20-year high school reunion and two women – a stay-at-home mother and a career-focused singleton – bump into each other. Seeing them now, it’s hard to imagine how they used to be best friends. However, as they reminisce about their high school years, ex-boyfriends and all the fun they had, it becomes almost hard to imagine why they haven’t kept in touch.

The characters are loosely autobiographical, with much of the story and personalities coming from real experiences in Marais and Wheeler’s lives. The two performers were often struck by how different their lives were and yet how they shared so many experiences – especially the societal expectation for women to have both the career and a family.

Your Perfect Life is a poignant and honest look at how life can take unexpected turns and how society judges us for dealing with it the best way we can. Audiences at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) and Cape Town called the piece “thought provoking”, “honest and relatable”, as well as “wonderfully funny”.

Join us at 44 on Long to celebrate the return to the stage of this beautiful piece of theatre that comes from the heart. Get your tickets via Quicket: https://qkt.io/YourPerfectLife
