It was thrilling to be at the opening of Maynardville Open-Air Festival on Wednesday January 22, 2025. The opening concert was Tour de Tchaikovsky, featuring Gerhardt Joubert (23) on piano and Ethan Lawson (24) cello, with Elna van der Merwe on piano. Beautiful music. Beautiful playing. It was a magical evening under the stars on a sultry evening, with no wind, perfection. The crickets and chirping birds provided background sound – noisy at times – to the amusement of the audience and musicians. The ambient sounds are part of the Maynardville experience. Waves of Wonder is the theme this year at Maynardville. With its twinkling lights and festive vibe, it is a wonderland.
There is an array of food in the food market which has tables and chairs for dining. Additional tables and chairs have been added- more than last year. With reasonable prices and lots to choose from, it beats schlepping a picnic. I had a hearty tot of sake from Sushiya – which was much needed.
Two Maynardville shows have sold out for the season Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Opera. The venue seats 757. This is the 3rd year, with VR Theatrical and Open Air Collective at the helm and the success is evident – sold out houses before opening. Bravo to all. Maynardville runs until March 8.
