Generations, presented by SboNdaba Dance, opened at Theatre Arts, last night 7pm, March 20. On tonight 7pm #HumanRightsDay March 21 and March 22 at 3pm.
Multi-layered dance theatre, with intriguing pieces, choreographed by the company’s artists. Poignant and quirky stories of their lives – such as “creating a dance studio in my kitchen”. Love that. The dance and movement is signature SboDance – vigorous, full of fury – signifying so much.
Explosive finale by Sbonakaliso Ndaba, artistic director of the company, Words around the Collar. I will call it The Table.
“We sit around the table … we build empires and submarines… partnerships are dissolved. Decisions are made around that table.” Yup. Resonates profoundly, doesn’t it as we see tables of influence around us in this messed up world. Stunning piece which leaves one stunned.
Sinazo Mxelli has done an extraordinary job in the director’s seat – linking each piece – and using multiple costume changes and interesting props. Impressive. Beautiful music and song by Zinzi Nogavu. The company members also sing.
It’s a big show and it fills the Theatre Arts space to the rafters. It is close up an intimate – dance feels like it is in your lap – in a good way – as one becomes immersed in the movement, voice and sweat and heat from the bodies in space.
Don’t miss.
