In October 2019 –seems like another era – I was privileged to see the extraordinary Sandra Prinsloo in Kamphoer – die verhaal van Susan Nell, at the Baxter in Cape Town. With the new Covid variant in December 2020, by December 19, most Cape Town theatres had brought the curtain down and as of February 2021, major venues are not open for public performance but things can change on a day to day basis. Live performance has started up again in Johannesburg- with Covid safety protocols in place. Patrons are delighted to be back at the theatre. The Market Theatre staged Kamphoer from January 29 to February 14, 2021. All the shows sold out. Then the Roodepoort Theatre announced its season – Feb 18-28, 2021. the eight shows have sold out. If you are reading this, sorry, sold out is sold out; especially in Covid. Fifty seats per performance and that is it. According to my understanding, and from what I can gather from industry operatives, under lockdown level 3 amended regulations, only 50 seats may be occupied in a venue. That means that if you see an announcement regarding a live show, then you should immediately book your seats. This goes out with the proviso that health issues need to be factored in, when attending theatre. There is a worldwide pandemic on the go. It is not advisable for people with co-morbidities to risk being in confined spaces. However, if you are in good health, check out what is popping up in theatre. Clearly, people are craving live performance as evidenced from the sold out seasons with Sandra Prinsloo in this award winning and acclaimed piece of theatre.
