Marc Lottering not only delivers hilarious enthralling stand-up/observational comedy but he also ignites the stage with his insatiable energy – and he sings. Lottering is an entertainer par excellence. So I Wrote That Musical is an upper of a show, a tonic, a must-see for the festive season. The show is on in The Pam Golding Theatre at the Baxter Theatre, until January 6, 2024.
So I Wrote That Musical is a master class in long form stand-up/observational comedy. The title of the show references the award winning Aunty Merle musicals which Lottering wrote (three editions) and were a mega success. He riffs off embarking on that journey and segues down pathways of hilarity of the life and times of Marc Lottering – performing in Dubai (hilarious about the South Africans living there), dealing with passport control, walking Hamilton the dog (love, loved that).
I love, love, loved So I Wrote That Musical. I love the way Lottering for the most part, takes the Mickey out of himself and that in his other stories, he is utterly respectful to others. He is a maestro in the long form comedy story, looping around itself and threading its way to another story. I adore the way he sends up his position as public figure and famous person (watch out for the pizza story).
Lottering did write the musical – Aunty Merle – and the super talented entertainer is a joy to watch in this show. He is a terrific singer. It would be great to see him at the piano (yes, super talented Marc Lottering), using his voice and physical comedy skills, in another show. Lottering is like a Duracell Bunny as he navigates the stage and it energises one as one watches. Fabulous. Fabulous.
We live in times with a lot going on in this sad world of ours. At the core of this show is that no matter how bad, kak things may seem, it is kak-era for others. Let us celebrate what we have and be grateful. Laughter helps us to calibrate. It sure does. It is wonderful to spend the evening at the theatre, being entertained by the brilliant Lottering.
I am writing this on a Tuesday and draw your attention that Tuesdays are priced at R160 (R180 for Wed, Thurs) and R220 (Fri, Saturday), so get there for a Tuesday date nigh. Note that tickets for the performance on New Year’s Eve, cost R295. What a way to bring in the new year – with a smile on one’s face and I think we all need that. There is wonderful gees at the Baxter on New Year’s Eve – with festivities (I will update with details when I get them).
