The narrative unfurls in a parking lot, with Jason (Malherbe) who is renting a parking bay from Stacey (Barbier). He is in advertising and she is a teacher. FROM THE TEAM BEHIND APPLE FACE AND BUCKET BOY, COMES A THRILLING NEW AND ORIGINAL INDIE COMEDY DRAMA TO THE BAXTER MASAMBE THEATRE IN SEPTEMBER
Written by Pierre Malherbe and directed by Adrian Collins, STACEY’S BAY is an off kilter comedy drama play, that examines the increasingly strange relationship between two neighbours in the same residential complex. Stacey (Berenice Barbier) is a school teacher, who starts renting her parking bay to Jason (Pierre Malherbe), who works in advertising.
What starts out as a cordial and mutually beneficial arrangement, soon deteriorates, as they both navigate the harsh realities of sectional title living and descend into a world of obsession, fantasy, rock star idolatry and body corporate meetings.
Berenice Barbier (actor)
Berenice Barbier is a South African actress, originally from Benoni now based in Cape Town, working in theatre, film, and television. She won the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress for her debut as Honey in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Sylvain Strike. 2023). Her screen credits include Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die (Gore Verbinski. 2025), The Shakedown (Ari Kruger. 2024), and the series Invisible (Jozua Malherbe. 2026). Known for her versatility, emotionally honest performances and funny bones, she is an emerging South African talent focused on bold, character-driven stories.
Pierre Malherbe (writer and actor)
Pierre Malherbe is a Cape Town based actor with over 20 years of experience in theatre, film and television. He has written and performed solo comedy stage shows and acted in acclaimed theatre productions of King Lear, Noises Off and Betrayal, among others, as well as roles in the Louis Viljoen plays, CHAMP and The Kingmakers. On stage, Pierre has most recently acted in the absurdist satire Chicken And at The Homecoming Centre and he wrote and directed Wolf Biscuit, which, at the time of writing, is being staged at The Antique Theatre. He wrote and acted in the plays, Apple Face and Bucket Boy, both of which were directed by Adrian Collins.
Adrian Collins (director and designer)
Adrian Collins is a Cape Town based, internationally experienced actor and local director. Although he has worked primarily as an actor, his focus is switching to directing, with a passion for creating Low-Fi independent theatre and film;
working with great scripts, but around low budgets, to create understated, beautiful, funny and thought provoking work that addresses the absurdity of our lives and existence. As a director, Adrian has helmed Pierre Malherbe’s plays Apple Face and Bucket Boy. He has also staged A Steady Rain, The Finklesteins Are Coming to Dinner, The Room and the award-winning King George.
