JOLTYD – Through the Ages of Music is on in the Baxter Pam Golding Theatre until January 3, 2025 at 8pm and is a jol; an upper of a show, just what we need for the festive season. The show, produced by Loukmaan Adams, features Adams and a dynamic cast of singers: Jarrad Ricketts, Kashifa Blouw, Xolisa Tom, Tashreeq de Villiers. Comedian Mel Jones is the host. The playlist is an eclectic mix which includes songs from the 50s, Motown, The Rockets and Mariam Makeba. There is a wonderful Freddie Mecury/Queen medley, sung by Ricketts. I loved the Cape Minstrel sequence which is such an affirmation of our unique cultural heritage in Cape Town.
The outstanding onstage band is led by musical director, Charlton Daniels with some knockout performances by the musicians. The dance is sensational. Choreographer Grant van Ster has worked wonders, not only with the team of dancers but also with the singers. The energy is on full blast with dance which is highly charged. Loukmaan Adams is known for his dancing skills but I was impressed at how the entire cast gets into the groove with complex dancing routines. Jarrad Ricketts who had a recent health scare was incredible. I wasn’t expecting him to be back on stage so soon. Ricketts (37) has been performing since he was 15 and it is testament to his resilience as an artist that the show must go on.
Joltyd has been superbly staged, with consummate direction by van Ster and Basil Appollis. They have created a big show, an epic extravaganza with opulent costumes and striking lighting. It is truly a celebration of song, dance and the human spirit. The sassy and fabulous Mel Jones heightens the upbeat spirit of the evening, with her banter with the cast and audience. The comedy harnesses the song. There are lots of laughs and we need that – singing and laughing along. Do not miss this stunning show.
