In March 2020, we were in the house at the launch of the Courtyard Playhouse in Cape Town- on the site of the Alexander Bar. The venue had been gutted and refurbished into a jewel of a theatre – with plush red velvet sets and excellent sound and lighting. The stage orientation was shifted. It was beautiful setting to see Conrad Koch and Chester Missing present, How to End Racism by Chester Missing. It was meant to be a tour but Covid happened and Chester and Conrad have been doing online gigs but now they are back with Nice Racists – a similar show to How to End Racism but obviously shaped by the events of the last two years and the current political landscape in South Africa. Racism has not gone away – perhaps it has become heightened by the fallout from the pandemic. Things have got a lot worse for many and sadly, there is no shortage of racial slurs. In this liminal kind of post-pandemic but still pandemic era, Conrad and Chester have a lot to say and they engage the audience in the process. Taking a moment for a shout-out to Alexander Bar for providing a vital platform for independent theatre, for many years, in Cape Town. And a shout-out to the Courtyard Playhouse owners who were dealt a bummer by the pandemic. They put everything into setting up a fully-kitted bonsai theatre and then Covid flayed them. They operate a successful theatre, also The Courtyard Playhouse, in Dubai. If you are in Dubai, check it out. Here is the link to my How to End Racism review, from March 2020, staged at the Courtyard Playhouse, Cape Town: https://thecaperobyn.co.za/theatre-review-how-to-end-racism-by-chester-missing-2020-tour/ The dates for the Nice Racists tour is in the box, on top of this page.
