On stage: Jimmy Nevis wows the crowd at Kirstenbosch Sunset Concert March, 20 2022, Human Rights Day Weekend

About tonight: Sunday, March 20, 2022. Superstar Jimmy Nevis enthralled the audience at Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa. The evening marked the re-entry of Kirstenbosch’s sunset concerts – the first time since March 2020- when the pandemic shut down live performance. It is the Autumn Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere tonight -March 20/21. It’s the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Last night, March 19 and it was full moon; the last full moon in the current astrological year. Tomorrow is Human Rights Day South Africa– March 21- a public holiday. It was sublime on this Human Rights Day weekend and Autumn Equinox, to be back in the gardens, with Jimmy Nevis and his superb band, getting the crowd on its feet, from the first song. There was a palpable sense of joy at being able to commune again for this sunset concert series which has been such an integral part of the Cape Town summer. The gees (spirit) was sizzling- with smiles of disbelief on faces – and sheer joy. It was thrilling to be able to enjoy music in nature, in this magnificent venue.

Only 2000 people allowed as per current lockdown regulations. The usual capacity (pre-pandemic) is 5000.  I cannot understand how around that number are shopping at indoor malls and yet only two thousand may gather at an outdoor venue. That is why it looks so empty in my pics. The Kirstenbosch concert venue was officially opened by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis. There is another concert, next Sunday, March 27, with Jeremy Loops. As with tonight’s concert, it is sold out. Hopefully, we can look forward to a full season of sunset concerts for the Cape Town summer 2022/23. #KBRocks.
