The 23rd JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience programme will be available to view on its website from – August 24 to September 5, 2021- at no charge. The theme: Border Crossings. The festival is being presented from Durban, by The Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN). There are 11 platforms at the festival. Jay Pather who is Associate Professor and director of the Institute for Creative Arts at the University of Cape Town, is the 2021 JOMBA! Legacy Artist and will open the festival on August 24. Pather’s work will be showcased in a digital photographic retrospective exhibition by Durban photographer Val Adamson. The festival includes 56 dance films, including six commissioned works by Durban choreographers. The South African Crossings platform, features South African dance makers/companies. Garage Dance Ensemble in Okiep, will present its film, Gat innie Grond, Wond in My Siel (Hole in the Ground, Wound in my Soul) choreographed by Byron Klassen. Cape Town’s Yaseen Manuel is the UKZN’s School of the Arts/Mellon Foundation’s Artist in Residence is working with JOMBA! to create two screen dance films with Durban’s Flatfoot Dance Company. Other collaborations include the festival’s work with the Vrystaat Arts Festival, Georgina Thomson and New Dance Festival. There will be films at JOMBA! by Sylvester Thamsanqa Majela (NEVERLAND) and Sizakele Mdi (Dust to Dust).
