The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra had scheduled some concerts for its winter season with small socially distanced audiences but as Covid numbers climbed, those concerts were put on pause and ticket holders were contacted. Ticket sales ceased. As it stands, June 24, 2021, all CPO concerts are going out online. The four concerts in the Winter Cyber Symphony season will go out- pre-recorded. Three concerts have already been filmed, on stage and the 4th will still be filmed. However, to re-iterate, there will not be an audience at the venue. As per current lockdown regulations, it is not possible to accommodate the Philharmonic, creative team and filming crew AND have an audience present. We are living in uncertain and very scary times, in the 3rd wave. Undoubtedly, nothing beats live but at the moment, that is not possible and the digital stage is where it is all happening. I loved the spring and autumn cyber seasons with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Each concert is accompanied by inserts with comment from the conductor and soloist – providing fascinating insights into the pieces being played. The concerts have been beautifully filmed. The concerts have calmed me and enabled me to transcend the angst of these days of Corona. I have been conditioned to think – “Thursday night – concert night.” Wrap up warm, stay safe and become immersed in the music. It is great to watch/listen, with headphones on – it heightens the intimacy of experiencing concerts in one’s own bubble.
