The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg, Cape Town is a vibrant community theatre which hosts shows, presented and produced by thespians and creatives who work, without remuneration. I do not like the word โ€œamateurโ€ so I will refrain from that term. The Masque is also a receiving house with professional productions staged at the venue. In between that lot, there are professionals who step onto the boards of community theatre from time to time and perform for the love of theatre. Students and new graduates from theatre institutions and academies hone their skills at the Masque. It is an incubator of activity. Volunteers are a key part of the success of the Masque – set builders, technical crew front of house, ushers etc. Read on about the Masqueโ€™s Volunteer Day on Sunday May 25, 2025 from 2pm-4pm:

Whether you’re a regular at The Masque, returning after a break, or completely new – this is your cue to get involved.

โ€œJoin us for an afternoon of theatre, connection, and discovery. We’re celebrating our amazing volunteers and inviting new faces to see what makes our theatre community so special,โ€ says Christine Kaye, Head of Community at The Masque.

โ€œSome people donโ€™t realise that The Masque is powered by volunteers, or that there are a myriad of roles you can play, itโ€™s not just about performing on stage. You also donโ€™t need to commit to every project or every show. We have a roster and a schedule which you can fit in with according to your other commitments,โ€ says Kaye.

The Volunteer Open Day offers a slightly different format this year, giving an entertaining insight into what goes in to being a volunteer at The Masque.

What to look forward to on the day:

โ—      โ€œBehind the Masqueโ€ โ€“ A Theatrical Farce
Directed by Kerith Coulson
A hilarious short play set in the chaos of opening night.

โ—      Meet the Team & Tour the Theatre
An introduction to the Masqueโ€™s different sectorsโ€”Tech, Productions, FOH, and Backstageโ€”plus a quick dive into The Masqueโ€™s history and community impact.

โ—      Beyond the Stage
Explore volunteer opportunities in our Youth Theatre Club, wardrobe, workshops, and more.

โ—      Connect & Chat
Grab a cup of complimentary tea or coffee and meet like-minded theatre folk.

โ—      FOH Training

โ—      For the Open Day only: the chance tosign up for a Masque Theatre membership with its range of benefits, at a reduced volunteer rate of R50/year.

โ€œOur Volunteer Open Day isnโ€™t just about welcoming new and returning volunteersโ€”itโ€™s also a chance to hear from the passionate people who keep The Masque thriving. Chat to everyone from our head of programming to our technical whizzes, from our front of house powerhouses to our backstage team and from our volunteer coordinator to our youth club inspirations!โ€™ says Kaye.

Whether youโ€™re drawn to the stage, the tech booth, or the front lines of audience engagement, The Masque team is here to show you the many ways you can be part of the Masque Theatre community. Come for the laughs, stay for the communityโ€”because theatre isnโ€™t just about what happens on stage; itโ€™s about the people who make it happen.

The Masque

The Masque is an iconic cornerstone of Cape Townโ€™s cultural landscape, celebrating over six decades of fostering creativity, inclusivity and community spirit. Founded by the visionary Bertie Stern, The Masque boldly stood as a beacon of inclusivity, one of only two theatres at the time that welcomed participants of all backgrounds through its doors.

Home to many amateur theatre societies over the years, it was forced to close in 1997 following a devastating fire. It reopened in 1999,largely thanks to the generosity of the late Joan St Leger-Lindberg. This enabled The Masque to carry on with its work as a vibrant and resilient community-driven venue, encouraging voluntary participation in all forms of theatre by all people.

Today, under the dedicated stewardship of the Stern Masque Theatre Trust, The Masque continues to thrive, curating high-quality amateur productions, promoting skills development, providing a service of artistic engagement with the community, celebrating diversity and building on the theatreโ€™s reputation as a sought-after professional venue-for-hire.

Through innovation, growth and creativity, as well as the support of volunteers and members, The Masque remains an important part of the social fabric, welcoming audiences of all backgrounds to experience the magic of live theatre.

The Masque offers a wide range of projects and programmes, including:

*Annual productions such as its holiday season fairytale and Valentineโ€™s Soiree;
*The Youth Theatre and Curtain Up Clubs running for 8 – 16 year olds in term time;
*Film masterclasses;
*The chance for people to learn about theatre with The Masque’s workshops, covering topics such as set design, sound and lighting and directing;
*A play reading series that provides the chance for writers to have their new scripts brought to life, as well as the opportunity for the public to be part of the development process.
