Here is thrilling dance-theatre news: Dance Can Dance, The Spirit of Enchantment is being staged at Artscape, for three performances, by Elvis Sibeko. The internationally renowned dance and theatre visionary, operates Elvis Sibeko Studios in Cape Town and he is partnering with the Cape Town Philharmonic and Artscape. This is an on-stage show- not a streamed show. Covid protocols will be strictly in place. The music for Dance Can Dance, The Spirit of Enchantment, was originally created electronically by Sibeko. For the staging at Artscape, the score has being arranged for a full symphony orchestra, by Damian Philander and will be played by the Cape Town Philharmonic, conducted by Brandon Phillips. It is an incredibly exciting project – and it is happening in Cape Town, in the 2nd year of lockdown. “The aim of the show is to bring back the spirit of dance and music cinematic orchestra music and Afro Fusion dance style,” reflects, Sibeko.
In staging this show, Sibeko is partnering with Indoni Dance, Arts and Leadership Academy and its director, the acclaimed, artistic director; choreographer Sbonakaliso Ndaba. Other choreographers involved in the project: Mzokuthula Gasa, Maxwell Rani, Janine Booysens and Tercia Alexander Amsterdam. The dance will include “elements from ballet to African and contemporary.” Fleur du Cap Theatre award winning Babalwa Zimbini Makwetu will sing works from her latest album Ndiyehlela. The South African Youth Choir will be on stage. Internationally acclaimed comedic magician Mawonga Gayiya is part of the line-up and will literally bring magic to the stage – which we all need.
The award winning Sibeko, who lives in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs, in Rondebosch, has established an international following, as choreographer and festival curator. His international work, includes teaching in the Netherlands. In 2019, he was a curator at Infecting The City Public Arts Festival [now named UN-Infecting the City]. Core to his work is ethos of bringing South African dance-theatre to the attention of the global stage and working at home to drive community arts development. Dance Can Dance, The Spirit of Enchantment at Artscape is the premiere season of this work. Proceeds “will help sustain those artists who have been severely impacted by Covid”.
