FynArts 2025: A Festival of Highlights from June 6 – 16

In a time of global uncertainty, the 13th annual Hermanus FynArts Festival offers a joyful constant—an unmissable celebration of the arts, culture, and creativity from June 6 to 16. This year’s expanded programme is brimming with must-see performances, captivating talks, and immersive experiences that promise to uplift and inspire.

Featuring a powerful mix of rising stars, returning favourites, and an exciting roster of new talent, the 2025 edition of FynArts is set to be the most dynamic yet. The festival kicks off in spectacular style with four major performances over the opening weekend (June 6–8 ):

  • The Opening Concert: A night of timeless classical favourites.
  • Strauss Bicentenary Concert: Celebrating 200 years of Richard Strauss, conducted by the acclaimed Richard Cock.
  • Cape Ballet Africa: Presenting striking extracts from SALT.
  • Songs of Praise: A soul-stirring choral experience that has moved audiences for over 30 years.

The energy continues for the full ten days with an eclectic music programme featuring jazz, classical, cabaret, and contemporary styles, including the unique performance Wine, Times and Other Tastings. This multisensory journey through South African history blends storytelling, music, food, and wine.

Theatre, Talks, and Thought-Provoking Performances

Festivalgoers can look forward to a stellar theatre lineup including:

  • Blonde Poison, the acclaimed drama starring Fiona Ramsay.
  • Mission Improvable, featuring Cape Town’s best-loved improv troupe.
  • Round of Applause Reloaded, a sharp and witty performance by Mariann Thamm.

The ever-popular Strauss & Co Series of Presentations returns with fresh insights and powerful conversations. The series opens with Minister Gayton McKenzie in conversation with Dr. Ismail Mahomed, offering a deep dive into the state of the arts in South Africa. Other topics range from The Soul of Vincent van Gogh and The Madness of Orchids to Fun Adventures in Space Science and The Origin of Symbolism in Art. Don’t miss Fine Music Radio’s panel Classics and Jazz in Conversation or the fascinating discussion on the local art scene with Frank Kilbourn and Charles Shields of Everard Read.

Two Exciting Firsts for 2025

This year marks the debut of two exciting new features:

  • Wake Up with the Daily Maverick: A fresh, early-morning current affairs series held in the Municipal Auditorium, complete with coffee and light breakfast snacks available for purchase.
  • Live Broadcasts by Fine Music Radio: Enjoy three days of live on-air performances and interviews direct from the Burgundy Restaurant.

Workshops, Writing, and Culinary Delights

The 2025 workshop programme is more diverse than ever, with opportunities to explore ceramics, photography, drumming, writing, and culinary arts. New this year, debut authors will take the spotlight in discussions about their just-published works—ranging from fiction and memoir to speculative and dystopian themes.

As always, the festival’s culinary component remains a major draw. Attendees can enjoy chef demonstrations, hands-on cooking classes, and gourmet tastings that bring together the best of the Overberg’s food and wine scene.
