The inaugural Jazz on the Green took place last weekend (November 16 and 17, 2024,) at Riverside Estate in Hout Bay (opposite the World of Birds). It was magic. Stunning setting – awesome lineup of jazz. It felt like this was a garden party; a party in a garden, rather than an event. There is a pool at Riverside Estate and people were dipping in and out if the pool. It was great to see families enjoying the day. The layout was casual – not theatre style. Some seating was supplied and people also brought their own chairs and umbrellas.
A similar programme was presented on both days, from 11am-8pm which made it a very family friendly day. There was apparently a good take up of the Family Early Bird Special (2 Adult + 2 Kids under 12 Free). A well-stocked bar and a gin bar (Hout Bay Harbour Distillery) and food for sale, contributed to the chilled, laid back vibe.
The eclectic lineup included Ramon Alexander Trio, Moonshine, Nomadic Orchestra, Jason Ward Trio, Nick Turner Band, Francesca Biancoli, The Hot Club of Cape Town, Graham Burton Band, The Vanessa Lee Trio, The Jazz Catz and Dan Fernandes.
Jazz on the Green was a collaboration between Vanessa Brierley (Red Hot & Blue Music), Elton Holland (Sord Music) and Grant and Clare Van Zyl and Francios Ashton (Rolling Audio). Brierley sang with her trio- The Vanessa Lee Trio. It is envisaged that there will be more Jazz on the Green happenings. Congrats to the team for establishing a new jazz platform in a family friendly environment.
