This year, The Masque is turning the beloved story of Red Riding Hood on its head!  Would the wolf really eat grandma? Are the villagers as shiny and happy as you think they are? And can the two ever become friends?

The exciting lineup of music includes hits such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas, Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood and Pat Benetar’s Hit Me With Your Best Shot.

Created by The Masque’s stellar team, Red Riding Hood is written and directed by Faeron Wheeler – who brought you Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Assisting her is Savannah Steyn in the AD’s chair. Savannah started as a production secretary intern at The Masque and, in a short timeframe, moved on to be a production manager intern, then production manager, and now assistant director.

Musical direction is by Claire Thomson and Linley Meavers, with choreography by Shaun Klaasen. Both Claire and Shaun are seasoned volunteers at The Masque – you might recognise them as cast members from Sleeping Beauty.

The cast includes: Qondèa Avril Mkansi as Red; Tithonia Roux as Lykana; Nawaal Adams as Grandma; Ethan Wilton as the Mayor; Matthew Jose Serrao dos Santos as the Wolf King and Andrew Munnik as Jeremiah.

Get ready for some foot-stomping fun as we explore the themes of friendship and understanding other points of view as we swing full-tilt into holiday mode!” says Director Faeron Wheeler.  “Red Riding Hoodis sure to make you and the whole family laugh, sing along and want to get up and dance!”

The Masque

The Masque is an iconic cornerstone of Cape Town’s cultural landscape, celebrating over six decades of fostering creativity, inclusivity and community spirit. Founded by the visionary Bertie Stern, The Masque boldly stood as a beacon of inclusivity, welcoming participants of all backgrounds through its doors.

Home to many amateur theatre societies over the years, it was forced to close in 1997 following a devastating fire. It reopened in 1999,largely thanks to the generosity of the late Joan St Leger-Lindberg. This enabled The Masque to carry on with its work as a vibrant and resilient community-driven venue, encouraging voluntary participation in all forms of theatre by all people.

Today, under the dedicated stewardship of the Stern Masque Theatre Trust, The Masque continues to thrive, curating high-quality amateur productions, promoting skills development, providing a service of artistic engagement with the community, celebrating diversity and building on the theatre’s reputation as a sought-after professional venue-for-hire.

Through innovation, growth and creativity, as well as the support of volunteers and members, The Masque remains an important part of the social fabric, welcoming audiences of all backgrounds to experience the magic of live theatre.

The Masque currently offers a wide range of projects and programmes, including:

*Productions such as its forthcoming annual holiday season fairytale Red Riding Hood in December;
*The Youth Theatre and Curtain Up Clubs running for 8 – 16 year olds in term time;
*A film masterclass series with Riaz Solker;
*The chance for people to learn about theatre with The Masque’s Bootcamp workshops, covering topics such as set design, sound and lighting and directing;
*A playreading series that provides the chance for writers to have their new scripts brought to life, as well as the opportunity for the public to be part of the development process.
