Classical music alert: official launch concert of the Cape Town Philharmonic Wind Ensemble (CPWE)-May 12, 2022

The official launch concert of the Cape Town Philharmonic Wind Ensemble (CPWE) is taking place under the direction of wind band specialist Faan Malan at Artscape Opera House, on May 12, 2022, at 7.30pm. The MC will be radio personality Waldo Buckle who will introduce the programme which includes a curtain raiser by the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble which will perform Poet and Peasant Overture by Frans von Suppe, also under the direction of Malan. The CPWE was established at the start of the pandemic but it has taken a while to present this official launch concert.

A fabulous programme of works will be performed by the CPWE. First up is Colonial Song by Australian composer Percy Grainger, written in 1911 as a piano piece as a gift to his mother, Rose. In the piece, he referenced and reflected on the Australian countryside.  Colonial Song will be followed by the Coriolanus Ballet Suite for Wind Orchestra by Frigyes Hidas, which premiered in 2003, at the International Wind Band conference in Sweden. Next up is Festivo! by Edward Gregson. It premiered in 1985 and is “a festive piece, exuberant in style.” Festivo has become a standard repertoire piece in many countries and is one of the composer’s most popular and most frequently performed works. The programme will conclude with Danzón No. 2, by renowned South American composer Arturo Marquez (70). He was born December 20, 1950. The danzón – a dance – has its roots in Cuban and some say Africa and is a synthesis of Spanish, British, and French dance forms. Danzón No. 2 “is a work is built on a beautiful, elegant main theme, stated on clarinet, building in intensity before erupting into passionate rhythms later.” Tickets are R120 person; senior citizens and scholars (under 18) concessions available at the door, if available.
