Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is at last going to hit the stage at the Masque Theatre this July. This production has been a long time coming and the entire theatre team couldn’t be more excited to see this play come to life. Join us for Shakespearean laughs, from July 5-15, 2023.
Twelfth Night is one of the bard’s classic comedies, featuring a cross-dressing love triangle, a wise-cracking fool, drunken shenanigans and a pair of yellow cross-gartered stockings. Director Barbara Basel is playing into the theme of freedom and chaos from the traditional festival of the twelfth night of Christmas by setting this production in 1920s Germany and the opulent Weimar Republic. Instead of classic palaces, audiences will get cabaret nightclubs and all the decadence that goes with them.
We say that Twelfth Night is hitting the stage “at last” because this production has been three years in the making. Director Barbara Basel explains, “During the early months of 2020, I was working on this play with a talented and enthusiastic cast, and we had reached the stage of ‘books down’ when we were thrust into a complete shutdown of all social gatherings due to the extreme COVID-19 lockdown restrictions imposed on South Africa. While we continued to hold rehearsals via Zoom for a while, the fact that theatre is a very physical activity, plus the knowledge that it would be a long time before we could perform on a stage to a live audience, we all reluctantly agreed to put the production ‘on ice’. Fortunately, however, that ‘icy period’ has now melted, and we are back into rehearsals with an equally enthusiastic cast.”
The cast for 2023 sees a few faces returning, including Wayne Ronne as Duke Orsino, Tami Schrire as Lady Olivia, Hannah Molyneux as Feste the fool, and Kathryn Griffiths as Maria. All four actors are incredibly happy to be back at it with Twelfth Night and hope to make it to the stage this time!

About the Masque Theatre The Masque Theatre is a vibrant, community driven theatre situated in the heart of Muizenberg in Cape Town. Annually, The Masque plays host to a wide variety of live productions of different genres – both community and professional productions. As a registered Non-Profit Organisation; The Masque strives to make theatre accessible to all – from both an onstage, backstage and an audience perspective. The Masque was opened in 1959 by a local attorney, Bertie Stern. Stern had a vision to provide a platform for both amateur and professional performers, regardless of their social or political situation at that time. When The Masque opened, it was one of the only theatres in Cape Town that was open to people of all ethnic backgrounds. In 1993, Bertie bequeathed The Masque into trust for the benefit and growth of community theatre. The theatre is still owned by the Stern Masque Theatre Trust and is managed by a board of volunteers. Today, the theatre continues to operate, thrive and grow despite adversity. Run by volunteers with a focus on community, the theatre showcases all genres of performance and is as widely inclusive as possible. The Masque is wheelchair friendly, has a fully licensed bar and snacks are available before shows and during intervals. Barbara Basel – director Barbara has watched, taught, and acted in and directed dramas for as long as she can remember. She is no stranger to the Masque stage and this is her 10th production since 2011, having directed The Crucible, Blithe Spirit, Road to Mecca, The Importance of Being Earnest, Fallen Angels, Design for Design for Living, Charley’s Aunt and two of the Masque’s reboot productions in 2019 (Run for Your Wife & ‘Earnest’) over a period of 9 years. In between directing, Barbara has acted in various plays at the Masque, the last being a cameo part in Calendar Girls. After a three year break, she is very excited at being given the opportunity to direct Twelfth Night for the Masque Theatre.
