Most of us like discounts and good deals and with that in mind, last September [2020], Bid on Travel- a travel auction portal, was established. Bid on Travel is currently geared for domestic travellers in South Africa because of the pandemic but if you would like to participate from out of SA, let the operators know and perhaps a plan can be made. It works like this: Bid on a holiday package, day trip or travel related service/product. If your bid is the highest, you get the deal. The current minimum bid is R100. There is no cost to place a bid; no deposit. How long does the successful bidder have to make a booking? Each deal may have its own terms and conditions but the general idea is to make it a pleasant experience. In general, you have six months to book – according to availability (if a hotel is full then it is full). No, you are not limited to weekdays or off-peak times. The latest auction: Betty’s Boutique Guesthouse, Mossel Bay. This family owned and operated boutique hotel has been furnished by the “personal antiques and treasures” of the owners who hail from England. The six en suite rooms are all different in style and ambience and have been described as quirky and interesting. All rooms are equipped with flat screen TVs, AC and tea/coffee making facilities. The 1903 limestone property, with covered stoep [terrace], provides views of the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua Mountains. Betty’s Boutique Guesthouse is highly rated on booking portals like TripAdvisor, Bookings.com and sa.venues.com.
