St Petersburg String Quartet Embarks on First South African Tour
Internationally acclaimed ensemble brings concerts and workshops to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Hermanus and Knysna
The Grammy-nominated St Petersburg String Quartet is set to make its South African debut this May, offering a series of concerts and workshops in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This highly anticipated tour will mark the first time the celebrated ensemble graces South African stages.
Based in the USA, the quartet has been praised for its “unassailable technique and intonation… an astonishingly calibrated range of voicings and dynamics… breathtaking assurance and laugh-out-loud wit,” according to the Washington Post.
The St Petersburg String Quartet boasts an illustrious international career and is recognised as one of the world’s most esteemed chamber groups. Lauded as the “natural successor to the Borodin [Quartet’s] crown” by The Sunday Times, their accolades include “Best Record” honours from Stereo Review and Gramophone, an opening night performance at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart festival, five-year residencies at both the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Wichita State University, and hundreds of concerts across North America, Europe, and Asia at prestigious series and festivals.
The Cape Town Concert Series will host the quartet for two church performances: at the Dutch Reformed Church in Franschhoek on May 22 at 7pm, and at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Green Point on May 23 at 11am.
Following their Cape Town appearances, the quartet will perform at OAK in Hermanus on:
May 24 at 3pm, and at the Knysna Music Society on May 25 at 7pm.
Programme
Audiences can expect an iconic programme of string quartets by Glazunov, Shostakovich, and Ravel in Cape Town and Glazunov, Prokofiev, and Brahms in Hermanus and Knysna.
