|ABRAHAMSE AND MEYER SUMMER SEASON OF WORLD THEATRE|
The plays in the 2021/22 Summer Season of World Theatre:
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
One of the most important and influential plays of the 20th century, A Streetcar Named Desire, transformed modern drama and confirmed Tennessee Williams’ reputation as the greatest poet/playwright of the American stage. Now, in celebration of the play’s 75th anniversary, Abrahamse and Meyer Productions bring a radical, revisionist twist to this iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning play in a searing new production that is bound to turn up the heat in this already scorching play.
Starring: Fiona Ramsay as Blanche du Bois with Marcel Meyer, Melissa Haiden and Matthew Baldwin
Direction: Fred Abrahamse
Where: Artscape Theatre
When: February 2–12, 2022

Abrahamse & Meyer’s critically acclaimed stage adaption of Tennessee Williams’ haunting short-story, One Arm returns to the Artscape Arena to play in repertory with A Streetcar Named Desire prior to both productions touring the USA.
In this “dark poem whose theme is the prevalence of mutilations among us all” Williams endowed a tragic character of mythic proportion with a metaphor that often surfaces in his work – a capricious, if fateful, physical defect, manifests as a disfigurement of the soul.
Starring: Marcel Meyer and Matthew Baldwin
Direction: Fred Abrahamse
Where: Artscape Arena
When: February 9–19, 2022

CONTESTED BODIES or DOCTOR JAMES BARRY, LORD CHARLES SOMERSET AND I
The flinging of human excrement by political activists, Chumani Maxwele, at the statue of British Imperialist, Cecil John Rhodes on 9 March 2015, became a watershed moment in how South Africans respond and relate to the trauma of our colonial past. In their “outrage for the stage” Abrahamse and Meyer do some faeces flinging of their own in an outrageous entertainment that is likely to be the most controversial and contested play of the year.
Starring: Marcel Meyer, Matthew Baldwin and Lungile Lallie
Direction: Fred Abrahamse
Where: Artscape Arena March 16–April 2, 2022
ADULTS ONLY – strictly no under 18s. SLNVPS. Contains scenes with strong language, partial male nudity, violence, prejudice, and simulated sex
