How does one continue in the face of seemingly unsurmountable challenges? Be inspired by the story of Rameez Cassiem which will staged in the Baxter Masambe in Cape Town, from February 18-22, 2025. In this solo show, REMO: A True Story Told by Rameez Cassiem aka Remo – A Journey of Resilience, Strength, and Hope, Cassiem shares his life story in the intimacy of the Masambe Theatre (the basement theatre at the Baxter). Direction is by Kim Blanché Adonis. The producer of REMO is renowned theatre maker, Daniel Mpilo May Richards who is based in London.

Richards felt strongly about providing a theatrical platform for Cassiem and that led to the Baxter season. One gasps when reading about what happened to Cassiem. It is difficult to process. Shortly before his matric exams, Cassiem was in a devastating accident (November 2003) which left him with brain injuries and a broken body. After a month in a coma, it took him months to learn to walk again. Unable to complete his matric exams, after his recovery, he ventured into the world of fashion and launched REMO, a fashion brand. REMO is Greek and means “the strongest or strong one. It’s a nickname that people use for Rameez”, explains Richards.

Dealing with the long term effects from the accident, Cassiem was subsequently diagnosed with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) with conduction blocks, “a rare and incurable nerve disease that causes progressive muscle weakness”. His first consultation to figure out what was happening to him was at the age of 21. It took two years to fully diagnose him. He was 23. With an extraordinary zest for life and positivity and resilience, he continued to embrace life. He lives with his disease, with humour and grace. He got married, had children and found work to sustain him and his family.  By day, he currently works from home for a contact centre.

Cassiem wondered if others would be interested in his story and he considered embarking on motivational speaking. He reached out to Richards for mentorship. Their association came about ten years ago, when they were put in contact by a mutual friends. This led to Richards mentoring him with his motivational speaking.  Cassiem’s career in motivational and public speaking took off as he captivated audiences with his story. He went on to become a radio presenter and producer on Radio 786. Richards encouraged Cassiem to extend his performance skills and assisted him in writing material for stand-up comedy gigs.

The comedy was tremendously well received, with people drawn to Cassiem’s performance and vitality. It was his dream to stage his story in a theatrical setting. A few years back, he presented a version of his story at Theatre Arts in Cape Town but there was no director and creative team on board.  After working with this extraordinary human for ten years, Richards encouraged Cassiem to develop his story as a theatrical show. Richards said “let’s do it” and booked the Masambe Theatre and brought in Kim Blanché Adonis as director. The award winning Adonis is known for her physically charged performance approach. She has wanted to get into directing for a while. REMO marks her debut as a director.

Cassiem has written the show, with some input from Richards and Adonis in crafting the script which Richards says is imbued “with raw honesty and humour.” The show is uplifting and “celebrates life, resilience, and the ability to adapt in the face of adversity.” It is “a night of laughter, reflection, and profound connection.” Scroll down, to read more about the production:
