“You didn’t buy a ticket. You gave us a purpose,” says Nadine Sisam, welcoming the audience – watching from home. Huge effort went into staging The People’s Playlist – streamed live from Penny Lane Studios– featuring Steven Lee Lewis and Nadine Sisam. This is an impressive lockdown concert.
Lewis is a SA X- Factor winner and Nadine Sisam is an alum of The Voice SA. I loved this show. It is a big show, with backing dancers, band and razzmatazz lighting. The charismatic and sassy Sisam goes through six costume changes. Her wardrobe includes a fabulous shimmering dress, funky tartan skirt and a yellow little dress (like a little black dress). Sisam says she collaborated with Shelley Nicole of Optimal Entertainment with some of the costumes and that she sourced/bought the rest herself. Lewis is also a stylish dude. His gear includes a terrific leather jacket and a white outfit.
Enough of the clothes, Steven Lee Lewis and Nadine Sisam are long-time friends and they put on a lockdown concert – with high calibre production values (lighting, sound) that one would expect in live performance. The playlist was gleaned from requests from fans and friends. Check out playlist, below. Lewis sings a new song, Some type of way, he wrote, during lockdown. For me, it is a song about connection and hope. I want to hear it again.
Many lockdown concerts have felt like they have been knocked together- as if the artists quickly changed from their pyjamas into something a bit smarter. Well, as I said, Sisam changes SIX times, so yeah, this has been impeccably put together. The whole vibe of this concert is emblematic of purpose. Here are two artists, with a substantial fan base who have conceptualised a lockdown concert to remember – singing songs that have been requested. Sisam does a magical rendition of Whitney Houston’s I will always love you. That song will never be the same for me. I will think of Steven Lee Lewis and Nadine Sisam, presenting The People’s Playlist. The dancers are great. They also change costumes- very quick-change- not sure how they achieved all the changes- operating from a recording studio.
Next September – 2021- when the pandemic is over – yes- let’s hope it is over by then- we can say – ‘oh- wow – last September we watched The People’s Playlist- an amazing concert – on our screens’. It will become part of our lockdown soundtrack and a keepsake memory.
