Exciting news for opera enthusiasts is the SITTOPERA™ recital, Mugg & Bean Heroic and Romantic Pieces from Opera, which is taking place in the grand Edwardian splendour of the Rand Club, in Johannesburg, on March 18, 2022.  Why is this the title of this recital? Marina Botha-Spies (soprano)

Marina Botha-Spies hasa masters degree in music performance from the University of Pretoria and a BTech (vocal art) from the Tshwane University of Technology. In November, 2014, she was invited to Neuchâtel, Switzerland, to perform in JS Bach’s Magnificat in D Major as well as debut Claude Pahud’s Te Deum. Other notable performances include: Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra’s opera gala (2015), Micaëla (Carmen, 2015), Madamme Silberklang (Der Schauspieldirektor, 2015), Adele (Die Fledermaus, 2015) and Pamina (Die Zauberföte, 2016).   She also enjoys performing music from the musicals, with performances of The Magic of Musicals (2014), Lloyd Webber Gala concert(Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra, 2015) and Bloemfontein City Orchestra, 2016) and Disney Magic performed with the GPO at the Mall of Africa (2018). In 2017 she was the female soloist in the Monumentskouspel at the Woman’s Memorial Monument in Bloemfontein in front of an audience of more than 4000 people. The concert was broadcast live on radio and streamed on YouTube. She also stared in the award-winning South-African musical Altyd in my drome. Highlights for 2018/2019 included singing Michaela in Bizet’s Carmen at the Joburg Theatre; touring to Aardklop 2018 and Woordfees 2019 with DEURnis: BA(R)rok portraying a Baroque operatic diva; appearing as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady at the Brooklyn Theatre; and starring in sold-out performances of Nana Mouskouri: As Greek as it gets during the Gauteng International Music Festival. In 2020 she starred as Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof for FullHouse productions, streamed on ArtsTV.com.      

Thabo Sithole (tenor)

Thabo Sithole attended Tswane University where he receive a diploma in opera. He has also studied at North West University and University of South Africa. When he was at school, he studied at the famous arts school, Sibikwa Art Academy, in Benoni. His principal opera teachers include Sidwell Hartman (University of Cape Town) and Thami Zungu (Tshwane (University of Technology). His coaches include Kamal Khan (University of Cape Town), Conroy Cupido (North West University) and Njabulo Madlala (Amazwi Omzansi Africa). He has performed opera arias by composers such as: G Puccini, G Verdi, WA Mozart, G Donizetti. He has been an understudy in operas such as L’elisir d’amore. Since 2015, he has performed as a solo artist and has been involved with concerts and recitals with other artists. Recent performances include a solo recital in 2020, at The Rand Club in Johannesburg. Sithole has worked with choirs, chamber music outfits, wind ensemble and orchestras and he has done extensive community work. This versatile artist has worked with the Gauteng Choristers, Door 6 Entertainment, Kopano Choir and Black Tie Ensemble.
