It was exhilarating to attend Live Art Weekend – Art as Resilience at the Baxter Masmbe, Cape Town on August 29, 2024. The weekend continues tonight, August 30 and wraps up tomorrow, August 31. The event is curated by Carin Bester and her company Working Title. Art as Resilience was the 3rd iteration for 2024 of Live Art Weekend. There will be a 4th Live Art Weekend. Watch this space for updates.

Art as Resilience features Oupa Sibeko & Sinenhlanhla Millicent Sihlangu, Kaulana Williams, Eddie Newman & Siphenathi Mayekiso, Iman Zanele Omar, Gavin Krastin and Carin Bester. I found all the work stirring and beautifully crafted. They speak of resilience in many spheres – personal, political, social, economic, work, overcoming extreme temperatures, illness, navigating stereotypes. This is a quickie shout-out to Carin Bester and Live Art Weekend – for igniting a dynamic platform for artists to tell their stories in a safe space. The performances at Art as Resilience moved from inside to outside and back and forth, as well as use of the foyer with visual art and video on a loop. I love that.

The venue was packed, with people braving the cold in Cape Town, wrapped up in blankets provided at the venue. The energy was visceral. It was a celebration of creativity in beautiful Cape Town, with a gathering of people soaking up stories. Watch TheCapeRobyn videos.
