Die Halwe Huis, written by Ricardo Arendse and starring Marlo Minnaar, received rave reviews and awards on the Afrikaans festival circuit. There were sold-out houses and a rapturous response. Creatives in high places have been chirping TheCapeRobyn that this is a production,”not to be missed”, so here I am with a little preview. This much-talked about drama, is set around an armature of poetry, storytelling and music. This season in Cape Town is at the Wave Theatre -July 17-25, 2023. Note: Short run. Please do not say: “Oh, is it over already” or “Oops, missed it.” The drama was commissioned in 2022, by the KKNK, NATi, Toyota Woordfees, Suidoosterfees. Marlo Minnaar won a Woordtrofee for Best Actor at Woordfees 2022. It is envisaged that the season at The Wave Theatr, will be its last Cape Town run. After Cape Town, Die Halwe Huis will be staged in Joburg and then it will be presented in Oudtshoorn- the childhhood town of the writer. Then that is it. So now is your opportunity to see the acclaimed play. Lee-Anne van Rooi (director and producer), explains:
Synopsis
Set in present day South Africa, in the washed out suburb of Brixton, Johannesburg, we meet Bumper Jansen. Outwardly, a successful writer. Through his reflections of the various landscapes of his past; his childhood in Oudtshoorn, his teenage years on the Cape Flats and his adult years in Johannesburg, we get to know him and try to gain a deeper understanding of the burning question: Why is he so desperate to end his life?
Die Halwe Huis is a new South African drama
This play is a gripping tour de force, ruthless in its honesty and gritty portrayal of the people of South Africa through poetry, storytelling and music. Part autobiographical, part fiction, the author draws from his own lived experiences to tell a broader, fictionalised story about men and the impact of patriarchy upon their daily lives.
