YOUTH ON THE RISE
With three concerts focusing on young musicians -5th SA Conductors’ Competition, CPYO and the strings ensembles from the CPO Music Academy, coming up, it is time to focus on the fact that the CPO, rather than sitting on the side-lines, has taken the initiative in education, development and transformation.
The SA Conductors’ Competition
Three candidates will conduct the CPO with one of three young soloists in the first movement of one concerto in the final round of the 5th SA Conductors’ Competition. The soloists are Samantha Durrant (Mendelssohn Violin Concerto), Lance Thuynsma (Mozart Clarinet Concerto) and Isaac van der Merwe (Mozart Piano Concerto no 20); each candidate will also conduct one of three overtures – Magic Flute by Mozart, Coriolan by Beethoven and Der Freischutz by Weber. All six candidates going to the semi-finals next week, have had to prepare all six works, and the three who go through will only know next Friday night who has got which works. It’s tense but the level of excitement will match the level of performance.
