Opera: Spirituals Concert – new showcase of uplifting African and African-American spirituals- with Cape Town Opera Chorus

We can all do with uplifting music and on October 3, 2021, Cape Town Opera Chorus is presenting the Spirituals Concert– a programme of uplifting African and African-American spirituals. This is a one-off concert and it is taking place at 3pm in the iconic Groote Kerk in Cape Town’s CBD. This is a new concert programme which has been compiled by CTO’s Chorus Master, Marvin Kernelle. In conceptualising this one-hour showcase, he was inspired by the exuberant reception of Grace Notes – a programme of religious and spiritual songs- which the CTO toured with in 2018 and 2019. The chorus performed to sold-out houses in Europe – Germany, Hungary, and Austria and it also performed in Cape Town. That was before Covid and theatres were packed to capacity. With the Spirituals Concert, Marvin Kernelle is using the framework of spiritual music to reflect on the current global crisis. He says: “It’s an evening of soul-stirring music that celebrates the spirit of caring, resilience and joy that has buoyed humanity during a difficult year. We wish this concert to be a reminder of the vital role music plays in healing our world.” The programme includes traditional songs such as Muhona Makutu Tanga and Mahlo A Bona and sumptuous arrangements of Elijah Rock, Ev’ry Time I Feel The Spirit and Didn’t My Lawd Deliver Daniel? Soloists performing in the concert, include Brittany Smith and members of the chorus which features Luvo Rasemeni, Ernestine Stuurman, Jodie Khan, Danielle Speckman, Babalwa Mdayi, Mlungiseleli Nqadini, Pumza Mxinwa and Andile Tshoni.
