Brasse, Tot Laat Toe, the new play by Zubayr Charles will be on in the Baxter Masambe from August 7-15, 2026. The play premiered at the 2026 Suidoosterfees and is on for nine performances and stars Anzio September and Abdullatief Davids and is directed by Carlo Daniels who recently won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical at the 2026 Cape Town Theatre Awards (previously the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards). Daniels is also the recipient of a FDC for directing. Brasse, Tot Laat Toe comes to The Baxter, August 2026
Following its successful debut at the 2026 Suidoosterfees, Brasse, Tot Laat Toe begins its official run at The Baxter Theatre this August.
The play tells the story of Luqmaan, who receives an unexpected visit from his former friend, Junaid, on the evening of the forty-nights memorial for his late wife. The two men have not seen each other in more than six years. And as Junaid returns under unexpected circumstances, both men are forced to confront uncomfortable truths about friendship, betrayal and the lives they have built apart.
Writer Zubayr Charles mentions, “The play explores the themes of growing older, betrayal, family disputes and friendship. These subjects are particularly important, because the story is told from a male perspective. We hope the production encourages men, both young and old, to communicate openly, confront unresolved pain and recognise the value of friendship.”
This newly exciting script written in Kaaps, is brought to life through physical theatre under the brilliant direction of Carlo Daniels. The play also moves between different periods in Luqmaan and Junaid’s lives, from their experiences in Saturday detention as teenagers to their lives as men in their mid-thirties. These shifts bring a great deal of nostalgia, humour and emotional complexity to the story.
Director Carlo mentions, “The play is also a slice of Muslim culture and Cape Town culture that we don’t often see represented on stage. I haven’t seen anything like this on stage in quite a while, and that’s what makes it so refreshing. This process has been really fulfilling.”
The production features a stellar cast and creative team. It is written by Zubayr Charles, a 2026 Cape Town Theatre Awards nominee for Best New Director, and directed by Carlo Daniels, the 2026 Cape Town Theatre Awards winner for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical.
The cast comprises Anzio September, the 2026 Cape Town Theatre Awards nominee for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, and exciting newcomer Abdullatief Davids. Lighting design is by Franky Steyn, the 2025 Cape Town Theatre Awards winner for Lighting Design, with original music by Salie Charles.
