Simmy (aka Simphiwe Majobe Nhlangulela) and Ami Faku were a sensation at Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts on March 30, 2025. This was the wrap up concert in the current concert series – ie 2024/2025 – and it was sold out. Sunday nights will not be the same – until summer 2025/2026.
The venue was packed to capacity – 6 000 – amazing vibe – with a dressed up crowd. Everyone was smiling, holding onto the summer. Fun and good times. It was a party concert, a jol of note. Interestingly, women dominated the crowd.
The 2024/2025 Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts kicked off on December 8, 2024 with the inspirational Cradle to the Cape concert, headlined by headlined by Zolani Mahola and Arno Carstens. I attended most of the concerts. The concerts that I missed, clashed with Maynardville, the Fleur du Cape Theatre Awards and Cape Town Opera Shorts. The rain held off and because the gardens are protected, these were wind free concerts. Congrats to Sarah Struys, Events and Tourism Manager at South African National Biodiversity at Kirstenbosch her team for an awesome sunset summer concert series. Security was impressive and active. For instance, I saw security marshals constantly asking people to hold onto their bags. I did not see people becoming inebriated.
There was an incredible sense of goodwill at all the concerts. I experienced no “bad” behaviour. No one was aggro. I didn’t see anyone getting snarky about chairs blocking their view – probably because at most concerts – people stood up and danced for most of the time. The exception was The Cape Town Philharmonic, with people seated all the way through. The marshals made sure that people kept to the no smoking and no-vaping rule, which was much appreciated. Radio host, Guy Macdonald was the MC at most of the concerts and in addition to announcing housekeeping rules (security, trash free zone), he also had the crowds in stitches with his wonderfully interactive comedic shtick.
