PIECES OF ME, AWARD-WINNING SOLO THEATRE BY BO PETERSEN RETURNS TO THE STAGE
An award-winning South African theatre work returns to the Avalon Theatre stage, opening urgent conversations about identity, history and belonging.
Pieces of Me is a profoundly moving solo theatre production written and performed by acclaimed South African actor Bo Petersen. The work has won a Standard Bank Ovation Award and was nominated for Best Solo Production at the 60th Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards. It will enjoy a limited run at the District Six Homecoming Centre, Cape Town, between February, 21-28, 2026 as well as additional performances in schools and community spaces across the Western Cape during February/March.
At the heart of Pieces of Me is a personal story that reflects a wider, often unspoken South African history. Bo Petersen grew up believing she was white. At the age of 19, she discovered her father’s secret: he was a man originally classified as coloured who had married a white woman and then raised a family in love, silence and fear. That discovery reshaped her understanding of herself, her family and her country.
Through vivid storytelling and powerful characterisations, Pieces of Me explores the emotional cost of secrecy, the violence of racial classification and the long shadow of apartheid on family life. The production asks a simple but unsettling question: who are you, if you can no longer be who you are?
“One of the best shows I have ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal. A brilliant chameleon telling her own story of always playing a part.” – Siobhan Cassidy
This South African version of the production features live musical accompaniment by Bo Petersen’s cousin, Christopher Petersen. The music is woven into the performance as a living archive of memory, connection and shared history.
Bo Petersen is an award-winning South African actor, director and theatre maker whose career spans more than four decades across stage, film and television. Now based in the United States, she continues to work globally as a performer, director and dialogue coach. Pieces of Me is her most personal work to date, shaped by a lifetime in theatre and a deep commitment to storytelling as a tool for reflection and healing.
Pieces of Me is aimed at audiences aged 14 and older and is accompanied by facilitated post-show discussions. These conversations have become an integral part of the work, creating space for audiences to reflect on identity, race, family history and transgenerational trauma. The production has been performed across South Africa, Europe and the United States, consistently generating deep engagement from diverse audiences, including young people.
Bo Petersen describes the work as an act of breaking silence. She believes theatre can contribute to healing by allowing difficult histories to be seen, named and shared.
Pieces of Me is produced by ASSITEJ South Africa, the national centre of the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People. Sponsors for the 2026 run include the National Arts Council and New York Bagels.
